As rookie quarterback Bo Nix prepares to take the reins in Denver, one familiar face is making a strong case to stick around — and cash in while doing so. Wide receiver Courtland Sutton, long a staple of the Broncos’ offense, is entering a pivotal moment in his career and is reportedly seeking a long-term extension that could be worth up to $80 million.
Sutton recently spoke with The Denver Post, expressing optimism about his ongoing contract talks with the Broncos’ front office. “My team has had a really good conversation with the guys up there… I think it’s working in the right direction,” the 29-year-old veteran said. “I’m open and optimistic about the fact that I’ll be able to be here for the rest of my career.”
That’s exactly what Denver hopes to hear — especially with a young quarterback like Nix needing a reliable, go-to target. Sutton has been that and more.
Over the past two seasons, Sutton has re-established himself as a top-tier red zone threat, posting at least eight touchdowns each year and racking up 1,081 yards in 2023. While he may not command the same national spotlight as some of the NFL’s flashier receivers, the production speaks for itself. He’s tough, experienced, and fits perfectly into what head coach Sean Payton and Bo Nix need — a steady, explosive veteran presence on the outside.
According to Spotrac’s market projections, Sutton could be looking at a contract in the neighborhood of three years, $79.7 million — let’s call it an even $80 million. That figure would put him just shy of the league’s highest-paid receivers, but still reflects his value and leadership on a team in transition.
For Denver, keeping Sutton would send a strong message: that they’re committed to building around Nix and creating continuity on offense. For Sutton, it’s the chance to remain the face of a franchise that drafted him in the second round back in 2018 — and be the security blanket for a young quarterback who could define the next chapter of Broncos football.
In a league where top-tier wideouts often change teams as soon as the money calls, Sutton’s desire to stay in Denver — and help bring along the next great Broncos QB — makes this a potential win-win for both sides. All that’s left is to get the deal done.
