After tying his career best of 9.5 sacks with the Baltimore Ravens last season, veteran defensive end Jadeveon Clowney appeared to demonstrate that he can still be a force to be reckoned with on the football field in the NFL.
Unfortunately, despite coming a half-sack shy of double-digit sacks with the Ravens last season, it appeared that no club was eager to sign the veteran defensive end, resulting in a longer-than-expected free agency process for the 31-year-old standout.
However, he finally came to terms with the Carolina Panthers, which appears to be a homecoming for the three-time Pro Bowler, who was born in Rock Hill, South Carolina and attended the University of South Carolina.
Clowney recently discussed why he opted to join with the Panthers at his inaugural news conference, according to Taylor Bisciotti of NFL Network.
“I’m at home,” Clowney explained. “My family is down the way. They brought all of this into the scenario. I believe this is the place for me to come out and show these people that I can still do this at a high level at the age of 31.”
Although the Panthers are in the early stages of rebuilding, attempting to surround second-year quarterback Bryce Young with as much quality as possible, Clowney will be a valuable addition to the defense if he can stay healthy and effective.
During his one season with the Ravens, Clowney had five passes defensed, two forced fumbles, a fumble recovery, 24 solo tackles, and 9.5 sacks.
