NFL Analyst Describes His Thoughts on Why the Raiders Should Trade Down
Divergent views exist on the Las Vegas Raiders’ optimal selection in the NFL Draft. In the long run, the Raiders may gain by trading down in the first round of the draft.
It’s one of the most important NFL Drafts in recent memory for the Las Vegas Raiders. The Raiders need to execute their draft plans well if they want to start Coach Antonio Pierce’s term off well, especially with a nearly new administration in place.
With several spots that need to be filled, the Raiders have a lot of options regarding what to do with the No. 13 selection. In order to obtain additional draft selections, Las Vegas may choose to trade back and select a quarterback, offensive lineman, or cornerback.
ESPN analyst Bill Barnwell discusses why he thinks the Raiders ought to get additional selections by trading down in the draft.
“With the Raiders, I try to be the voice of reason, but usually it’s for nothing until it’s too late,” Barnwell remarked. They don’t appear to be as near to contending as they think. Last year, this club was the 11th oldest in the league, mostly due to the fact that under Jon Gruden and Josh McDaniels, it selected almost none of the top 100 players.
“Although some of those veterans have left this offseason, the Raiders’ initial expectations for the players they selected in their drafts either didn’t work out or weren’t good enough to play, which is why defensive tackle Bilal Nichols, guard Greg Van Roten, and cornerback Marcus Peters were in starting roles for the majority of the previous season.”
Barnwell doesn’t think quarterback Aidan O’Connell will be able to assist the Raiders get closer to the Kansas City Chiefs, who have controlled the division for the most of the previous ten years.
While Barnwell stated, “the Raiders need to upgrade on Aidan O’Connell at quarterback.” Additionally, they are only one quarterback away from facing the Chiefs. (Yes, they defeated the Chiefs in December, but it won’t work if you’re depending on defeating Patrick Mahomes every time out with two defensive touchdowns in a row.)
Though he doesn’t think it will happen because General Manager Tom Telesco hasn’t done it before, Barnwell thinks the Raiders should trade down.
According to Barnwell, “Las Vegas also needs long-term answers at running back, in the secondary, and along the offensive line.” “For this reason, after settling down to acquire further selections in Round 1, this is the ideal club to take a shot at a quarterback like Washington’s Michael Penix Jr. early in Round 2. I just said that Tom Telesco, the general manager of the Raiders, never traded down once while he was with the Chargers, so I wouldn’t bank on Vegas really trading down.
The NFL Draft is scheduled for April 25–27, 2024, in Detroit, Michigan. With the 13th overall pick right now, it belongs to the Las Vegas Raiders.
