NBA Executive Reveals Surprising ‘Favorite’ for Top Star Trade

After being swept in the first round of the NBA playoffs by the Minnesota Timberwolves, the Phoenix Suns are worried about Kevin Durant’s future with the franchise.
According to Sean Deveney, a Western Conference official has identified the Miami Heat as a likely destination for Durant, putting them at the top of the list of prospective suitors.
“A few teams should come up in talks,” the CEO stated. “The Heat would be a favorite.”
On the Pat McAfee Show, ESPN’s Brian Windhorst discussed Durant’s financial status, underlining that his eligibility for a contract extension this summer represents a critical time for both him and the Suns.
“There’s an interesting moment happening,” Windhorst added. Kevin Durant is eligible for a contract extension. He has a two-year, $105 million deal. However, because he is eligible for a contract extension, it presents an ideal opportunity for Durant and the franchise to effectively make a statement about each other.”
Durant, who has two years and $105 million remaining on his deal, may decline an extension, indicating a desire to depart Phoenix. Alternatively, the Suns’ refusal to give an extension might indicate their unwillingness to commit a significant deal to an older player.
Although Durant is under contract until the 2026-27 season, a trade may bring him to Miami, where he would play with Jimmy Butler and Bam Adebayo. The Suns’ attempt to form a super squad with Durant, Devin Booker, and Bradley Beal this season failed to fulfill expectations, implying that this may be their final attempt.
Durant’s prospective trade request may benefit both him and the Suns. Phoenix, which gave up several first-round selections to build its squad, may recoup some assets or entice fresh players for another championship run in a deal with Miami.
Durant’s interest in Miami was clear last year when, amidst instability inside the Brooklyn Nets, he demanded a trade and named the Suns and the Heat as his top targets. This earlier interest not only demonstrates Durant’s respect for the Heat’s competitive environment, but also his continuous fascination with the team.
As negotiations continue and the offseason approaches, Miami may see Durant as the final piece required for a title, renewing a relationship that was examined years ago and backed by his recent choices. Meanwhile, the Suns must determine whether to rebuild or reorganize their roster, maybe without Durant.
