Meeting a Need: Former Wake Forest cornerback DaShawn Jones helps solve Alabama’s poor secondary.

The signing of DaShawn Jones, a former Wake Forest cornerback.

According to Matt Zenitz of 247Sports, Jones, who visited Tuscaloosa over the weekend, is anticipated to join the Crimson Tide via the transfer portal.

Last season, the redshirt sophomore started nine games, leading the team with three interceptions and two pass breakups. He recorded 37 tackles.

The Baltimore native graduated from Mount Saint Joseph High School as a three-star recruit. He weighs 181 pounds and is 6 feet tall.

Jones helps solve one of Alabama’s two most pressing issues following spring practice: offensive line and defensive back.

The Tide lost both of its starting cornerbacks, Terrion Arnold and Kool-Aid McKinstry, to the NFL Draft. Caleb Downs, the starting nickel back and Freshman All-American, transferred upon Nick Saban’s retirement, as did Trey Amos and Earl Little.

Tony Mitchell and Peyton Woodyard, both defensive backs, have recently joined the transfer portal.

“It’s just about bringing in some guys that can help our program, help our team be better, give us some depth, and help with special teams,” coach Kalen DeBoer said on The Next Round last month. “You’d love to have some guys that can continue to come up through the program and develop.”

On Monday, the Tide welcomed former Charlotte defensive back Kam Howard to its spring transfer class, which also includes offensive tackle Kadyn Proctor and kicker Graham Nicholson.

Howard started two games and played in 12 games as a rookie last season. He ended with 38 tackles, two interceptions, and one pass breakup.

Even before Howard and Jones arrived, Alabama’s secondary depth chart was loaded with new faces.

Safety Keon Sabb, previously of Michigan, and cornerback Domani Jackson, formerly of USC, are expected to start.

True freshman Zabien Brown, Zay Mincey, and Jaylen Mbakwe—all five-star prospects—enrolled early and are expected to compete for playing time as well.
