J.J. Watt Clarifies Houston Texans’ Return Comments

J.J. Watt, a future Hall of Fame pass rusher, has recently hinted that he might return to the Houston Texans as early as this season.

“I’ve had 12 great years in this league and I’m very thankful to have walked away healthy and playing great,” Watt stated. “I told DeMeco last year, ‘Don’t call unless absolutely necessary, but if you do call, I’ll be there.'” And he is aware that he should only call when absolutely necessary. This is the final year I’ll tell him that since I’m not going to continue training the way I have been, but he understands that if he ever genuinely needs it, I’ll be there for him. I don’t see that happening; they have a really excellent bunch.”
Would J.J. Watt Actually Return to the Houston Texans?

The opportunity to play with wunderkind quarterback C.J. Stroud and reigning NFL Coach of the Year Demeco Ryans — one of Watt’s old colleagues — must be appealing to Watt, who retired after the 2022 season.

Watt, however, argues that the Texans would have to be in dire straits for him to consider a return to the NFL.
“The only thing you’d ever come back for now is if the exact right situation happened where you have a chance to do something you have never done before,” Watt stated. “That’s the only scenario that could ever bring you out because you also have to look at the opposite side of that and all the bad shit that could happen.”
If Watt does suit up for the Texans this season, he will have a genuine shot at a Super Bowl ring.

According to Pro Football Talk, Watt’s comments came just days after Pat McAfee questioned Texans General Manager Nick Caserio about a possible Watt comeback. Caserio did not dismiss the notion.

Watt presently has 114.5 career sacks and appears to have left the door open to pursuing more with the Texans in 2024.
