West Brom’s transfer target has been disclosed by Championship opponents

A player connected with a move to West Brom and other Championship teams is currently without a club, but he will have to pay a price.
Huddersfield Town have released a player who had been linked with a move to West Brom and another Championship club during the January transfer window.

French outlet Foot Mercato stated at the end of January that the Baggies, along with Bristol City, were interested in signing Brahima Diarra. An undisclosed Ligue One club was added to the list of bidders, along with ten other Championship teams.

Sudinfo, a Belgian magazine, stated in April that Leicester City and Hull City, as well as Red Bull Salzburg, Portimonene, Vitoria de Guimares, and Famalicao, were also interested.

The most recent update, however, comes from Huddersfield Town themselves, who revealed their retained list last week. Huddersfield were relegated from the Championship and have decided to trade five players with first-team experience.

Diarra, Jordan Rhodes, Yuta Nakayama, Connor Mahoney, and Aaron Rowe were all advised that their contracts at John Smith’s Stadium would not be extended. The Terriers have hired Michael Duff, a former Barnsley, Cheltenham Town, and Swansea City manager, and he will have the opportunity to build his own side.

Huddersfield did state in its retained list that, despite Diarra’s departure on a free transfer, the club will be compensated for its role in his development. Diarra joined Huddersfield as a youngster after leaving AC Boulogne-Billancourt in the summer of 2019.

The 20-year-old appeared in 23 appearances in all competitions this season, including 21 in the Championship. The five-time Mali under-23 international was primarily a substitute this season, making five league starts and assisting twice. Diarra last appeared in a competitive match for the club on February 24 as a three-minute substitute in a win against Watford, although he was not included in any of Huddersfield’s matchday squads for the remaining six games of the season.
