United’s retained list is expected to be released this week, and when questioned about it during yesterday’s open-top bus procession, U’s head coach Buckingham replied: “We have to care after our own first. We have to make judgments on players, and we will make sure we do them correctly.

“Then we’ll look at what we’ll need for the championship. We want to play in a specific fashion, and we have guys in this building who can do so.

“That’s the pleasing thing for me, but now it’s about adding some additional quality to our group, to not only make sure we’re sustainable, but that we can play our Oxford way in the Championship.”

He continued, “That job began before the final. We always undertake what-ifs and scenario planning, which is always continuing in the background.

“We’ve set a timetable for what we want to achieve and what that looks like. We now have some really solid foundations in place that will allow us to achieve as much as we can in the timeframes required to go where we want to go.
