EFL transfers: Rotherham United sign ex-Sunderland, Wigan, Preston, and Sheffield Wednesday Man
Rotherham United has reached an agreement to sign another top star among Sunderland, Wigan, Preston, and Sheffield Wednesday.
The former Sunderland player has also spent time at Manchester United and Doncaster Rovers throughout his career.
Reece James, a former Sunderland player, has signed for newly relegated Rotherham United.
James joined Wednesday permanently last summer after a successful loan spell at Hillsborough, where he helped the Owls gain promotion from League One. However, the 30-year-old defender only appeared in eight Championship games during the 2023-24 season, with one league appearance coming off the bench in the previous calendar year.
The left-back, who can also play in midfield, was released by the Owls at the end of the season, but has been signed by EFL team Rotherham United following the Millers’ relegation from the Championship to League One in 2023-24. The athlete has signed a two-year contract with The New York Stadium.
The 30-year-old former Manchester United, Preston North End, Wigan Athletic, and Blackpool winger joined Sunderland for the 2018-19 season, making 27 league appearances for Jack Ross as the Black Cats fell in the League One play-off final at Wembley. James was then moved to Doncaster Rovers after only one season on Wearside.
After departing Sheffield Wednesday, James used social media to thank the club and its fans for his time at Hillsborough. “I’d just like to say how grateful I am to each and every one of you for the support that you’ve given me over the last 2 seasons,” James said to his Instagram account.
“The memories of gaining promotion at Wembley and that remarkable comeback against Peterborough will remain as highlights of my career. To say it’s been two dissimilar seasons would be an understatement, but I’ve thoroughly enjoyed my time at the club and wish the manager, his staff, and the guys continued success.”
