Oxboro, Massachusetts — If you’re at Gillette Stadium this summer, you’ll most likely be seeing Patriots quarterback Drake Maye compete for Jacoby Brissett’s starting position.

However, New England has another really fascinating competitor.

Rhamondre Stevenson requires someone to assist take the pressure off his shoulders, and there will be plenty of candidates battling throughout camp to fill that position.

“It’s still early, but what I’ll say is that it’s going as planned,” Patriots running backs coach Taylor Embree said Tuesday. “There will be rivalry from bottom to top. I want to see competition from the practice squad, the third player on the depth chart, and the third-down guy.

Antonio Gibson is expected to play third-down, easing Stevenson’s responsibility over the previous few seasons. It’s an open competition to determine whether one or two players can make their way onto the roster after those two.

Kevin Harris and JaMycal Hasty provide league experience, while Deshaun Fenwick and Terrell Jennings want to maintain the Patriots’ history of keeping an undrafted rookie on the opening roster.
