Middlesbrough will rekindle their interest in a 24-year-old star and may want him back.
MIDDLESBROUGH will renew their interest in Ryan Giles this summer in an effort to bring the defender back to Teesside.
While Boro presently has Alex Bangura and Lukas Engel as left-back possibilities, the Championship promotion hopes plan to bolster the position this summer.
Giles had a tremendously successful loan spell at the Riverside two seasons ago, making 45 league games and racking up 11 assists – the joint-highest in the Championship – as Boro made the playoffs.
The Teessiders attempted to recruit him at the end of his loan from Wolves, but despite making an attractive offer, Giles chose to join freshly promoted Luton Town.
Things did not go well at Kenilworth Road in the first part of last season, with the 24-year-old falling out of first-team contention, and he joined Hull City on loan during the January window, with the Tigers obligated to make the transfer permanent this summer for £4 million.

Former Hull manager Liam Rosenior was a great supporter of Giles, who made 17 appearances for the Tigers in the second part of the season, but it’s unclear if the wing-back will be included in new head coach Tim Walter’s plans.
Acun Ilcali, Hull’s ambitious owner, wants promotion, but he said this week that his expenditure will be limited this summer owing to economic and sustainability requirements. He still expects to be able to spend up to £15 million and wants five loan players.
It’s unclear if Giles will be included in Walter’s plans, but Boro are hoping to take advantage of the ambiguity by arranging their own deal for the left-back.
Ideally, the Boro leadership would prefer to manufacture an initial loan agreement with the possibility of a permanent move later on.
Giles is said to have truly enjoyed his season on Teesside, where he formed close bonds with both Boro head coach Michael Carrick and first-team coach Jonathan Woodgate.
The two are eager to make a comeback, with Giles’ aggressive runs down the left side being a key component of Boro’s excellent form over most of the 2022-23 season.
Bangura and Engel joined last summer after Boro missed out on Giles. Hayden Coulson, Boro’s other senior left-back, is poised to move on a permanent basis this summer, with Blackpool interested in the 25-year-old following a good loan spell at Bloomfield Road.
