CBS Philadelphia, PA Bryce Harper, the slugger for the Philadelphia Phillies, will start for the National League at first base in the 2024 MLB All-Star Game. Harper garnered the most votes during the first round of voting. Harper has been selected for eight All-Star games.
In the first phase of the fan vote, Harper received 3,277,920 votes. Since John Kruk in 1993, he is the first player from the Phillies to win the fan vote at first base.
With the Phillies emerging as one of the league’s top teams during the first 162 games of the 2024 season, Harper is off to a scorching start. The Phillies led the league in record going into their game against the Miami Marlins on Thursday night, with a 53-27 record.
Harper is cutting when Monday night arrives.305/.402/.585 with an OPS of.987. After 75 games, he’s hit 20 home runs and collected 57 RBIs. After hitting a leadoff double against Marlins starter Trevor Rogers on Thursday, he extended his hitting streak to 12 games.
Behind Los Angeles Dodgers star Shohei Ohtani, Harper had the second-shortest odds this week to win NL MVP on FanDuel Sportsbook. Harper would have his second MVP in a Phillies uniform and third overall if he were to win one more.
In addition, Harper is juggling this with his new position at first base, which he took up in the 2023 campaign following Rhys Hoskins’s season-long injury absence. According to FanGraphs, Harper has three total defensive runs saved over average, placing him among the top seven first basemen in the league.
Harper will not be the only Philly participating in this year’s All-Star game. Alec Bohm led all NL third basemen in Phase 1 with 3,175,134 votes. Additionally, in their respective positions, J.T. Realmuto, Trea Turner, Nick Castellanos, Brandon Marsh, and Kyle Schwarber progressed to Phase 2 voting.
Voting in Phase 2 will start on Sunday and run until Wednesday, July 3, at noon. The winners will be revealed at 7 p.m. the same day.
The Rangers’ home field, Globe Life Field in Arlington, Texas, will host the 2024 MLB All-Star game on Tuesday, July 16.
