SMALL SETBACKS: The New York Yankees option their injured reliever to Triple-A despite reinstating him.

MASSIVE Setback: The New York Yankees have confirmed the injury of another highly experienced player, but they have optioned him to Triple-A.
Right-hander Scott Effross will be returned from his rehab assignment, the New York Yankees said Wednesday, but there’s a catch. Although he hasn’t returned yet, the Yankees want to give him additional playing time at Triple-A as he still has Minor League options. Since it has been over two years since the right-hander last pitched in a Major League game, it seems reasonable that he is still rehabilitating in between appearances. Effross would have back surgery this past December, further postponing his return, after Tommy John surgery at the conclusion of the 2022 season.

In response, the player obtained in the deal for Estevan Florial, Cody Morris, has been flagged for assignment and will be placed on waivers.

Reinstated, but not quite back with the Yankees, is Scott Effross

After suffering an injury at the end of the 2022 campaign, Scott Effross had to have two operations in two separate locations. It has been a difficult journey back for him. The right-hander appeared to be headed back to the field after the All-Star Break, but it’s uncertain when exactly he’ll return. Effross was placed on the injured list, so it appeared that the Yankees would activate him right away; but, by sending him to Triple-A, Effross will have more time to strengthen.

The right-hander hasn’t yet reached his full potential, as seen by his average fastball velocity of only a hair below average. This should allow him to put in more effort. The fact that his stuff is back to where it was in 2022 is more significant than his ERA because, even though he isn’t a hard thrower, the movement and velocity of his pitches are still vital to his performance on the field.

As a result, Cody Morris, who had experienced some difficult times at Triple-A, has been assigned. With the Scranton RailRiders, he recorded a 4.25 ERA with a 16% walk rate. However, he was cut from the list when the Yankees had to make room for Scott Effross back on the 40-man roster.
