With the Bears’ rookies ready to report to training camp tomorrow, first-round selection Caleb Williams remains unsigned. With few negotiating parameters on rookie contracts, NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport believes there is minimal possibility the quarterback will participate in a rare rookie holdout. However, Rapoport hinted that Williams might not on the practice field until veterans report on Friday.
According to NFL.com’s Kevin Patra, signing bonus payment schedules and offset language are among the most difficult aspects of rookie contracts. Williams isn’t represented by an NFLPA-certified agent, and Rapoport warns that his unconventional “board of directors” approach might lead to lengthy discussions. Ultimately, the USC product is anticipated to sign a four-year contract worth $39.5 million, with a fifth year option.

Williams did not appear concerned by his contract situation, with the youngster deferring to his agent.

“I’m not handling that,” Williams told reporters over the weekend (via Colleen Kane of the Chicago Tribune). “My attorneys and attorney, as well as the head of the Bears, are managing this. That is not the position I am addressing.”

For what it’s worth, Williams stated that he’s thrilled to train with his new team, indicating that he doesn’t expect a delay.
“You get to the end of the break, you train, and you’re ready to go,” Williams remarked (via Kane). “I’m really excited. I’m incredibly excited to be back in Chicago and get this thing underway. We’re barely three weeks away (from the exhibition’s opening).

Williams is one of seven draft choices who have not signed rookie contracts. This group includes the quarterback’s new teammate, Rome Odunze, who was drafted ninth overall. Rapoport does not anticipate any complications with the wide receiver’s contract, stating that the agreement would likely be finalized only when absolutely required.
