It might turn out that Bill O’Brien’s time as Ohio State’s offensive coordinator is quite brief.
O’Brien is supposedly vying to become the head coach of Boston College. According to a Boston Herald article by Rich Thompson, O’Brien and Boston College are already “down to the minor details” in their negotiations. O’Brien would get a substantial financial commitment from the Eagles, and an announcement may be made by Wednesday.
Although the shift would be sudden, there probably would be a rationale. O’Brien was born and raised in Boston, Massachusetts.
This would be a far easier adjustment for him than relocating to Columbus to work for the Buckeyes, considering he spent last season as the offensive coordinator of the New England Patriots.
O’Brien was a significant addition for Ohio State when they established their 2024 championship goals. The Buckeyes would undoubtedly suffer a hit if he were to go so soon, having to start again in terms of organizing their 2024 offense. It may also have an effect on the players they have added, such as one who transferred to Ohio State citing O’Brien as a factor.
The search for a new head coach at Boston College is underway as Jeff Hafley unexpectedly resigned to take a position as an assistant in the NFL.
