Around Chris Paul and Victor Wembanyama, the Spurs acquire wing depth.

The mission assigned to the San Antonio Spurs is to assemble a competitive squad around franchise player Victor Wembanyama. Wembanyama is competing in the Olympics this weekend, but the team’s efforts to get back into contention will continue after he gets home. According to Michael Scotto of Hoopshype.com, the Spurs gained possible wing depth on Friday when they signed Brandon Boston Jr. in NBA free agency.

Boston will have to compete for a position on the roster during training camp since his one-year, non-guaranteed deal with the organization is short. With the addition of Malachi Flynn this past week in NBA free agency, the Spurs made yet another significant move. Additionally, Flynn’s contract is not guaranteed, so he will need to perform well in camp.

The Spurs currently have 15 players with guaranteed contracts. The Spurs will need to either execute a trade in which they send out more players than they take back, or they will need to cut a guaranteed deal, for Boston or Flynn to win a seat on the regular roster.

There may be a second option for Boston to make the squad with a two-way deal. With only three years of NBA experience under his belt, he qualifies for a two-way contract. All three of the Spurs’ two-way berths are presently filled by Harrison Ingram, Jamaree Bouyea, and David Duke Jr. But, should they have another player in mind for one of those positions, such deals may be simply renounced and do not go against the limit. A two-way contract is not possible for Flynn.

After playing with the Los Angeles Clippers for the last three seasons, Brandon Boston Jr. is joining the Spurs. On draft day, Boston, the No. 51 overall selection, was traded by the Memphis Grizzlies to the Clippers.
