Wayne Rooney claims that the 33-year-old new manager of Plymouth Argyle deserved to have his contract extended.

Joe Edwards deserves a contract extension with the Plymouth Argyles, according to Wayne Rooney.
The 33-year-old captain of Plymouth Argyle has inked a new contract with the Championship team that will keep him in place until the conclusion of the 2025–2026 campaign. Wayne Rooney has said he does not anticipate age catching up to Joe Edwards, the team’s current captain.

The head coach of Argyle also expressed his “delight” at Edwards’ signing of a contract extension with the Championship team through the summer of 2026. Edwards will be 34 at the end of October.

The news was confirmed on Friday night, and before Saturday afternoon’s away match at The Hawthorns against table-topping West Bromwich Albion, Edwards received a rousing ovation from the 2,100-strong traveling Green Army.

“I’m really delighted for Joe and the club,” said Rooney. My first phone call after joining the club was to him. He is a crucial member of our team both on and off the field.

“I believe that he should have received a new contract based on his efforts this season. Players who feel valued by the team are always essential, both because of what Joe has accomplished in the past and what I see happening in the future.

“He doesn’t appear to be slowing down at all. He’s been an amazing leader for us, and I believe it’s critical that my captain be here with me.”
