Was the next manager hired by the Texas Rangers? A former Miami Marlins captain has been appointed as a front office advisor.

After splitting from Donnie Ecker today, the Texas Rangers have now agreed to sign a new manager.

The Texas Rangers have signed Skip Schumaker as a senior advisor to Chris Young and Luis, the previous manager’s bench coach.

Chris Young, the Texas Rangers’ president of baseball operations, has appointed former Major League player and manager Skip Schumaker as a senior consultant.

After leading the Miami Marlins for the previous three seasons, Schumaker left before the season’s last two games to handle a medical problem in his family. Evan Grant of the Dallas Morning News, who initially reported these moves, claims that the team is also negotiating an agreement with Luis Urueta as their bench coach.

Under Schumaker, Urueta, who turns 44 in January, has spent the last two seasons on the Marlins’ bench. He formerly served as the Arizona Diamondbacks’ coach from 2018 to 2022. In 2020, Urueta, a Columbia native, was elevated to the position of bench coach in Arizona.

After leading the Marlins to an 84-78 record and a postseason trip in his rookie season, Schumaker—who turns 44 in February—was named the National League Manager of the Year.

If manager Bruce Bochy decides to retire after the 2025 season, the third and last year of his present contract, Schumaker seems to be a strong contender to succeed him. Bochy, 69, has stated that he has no interest in coaching far into his seventies. Prior to his appointment as the new manager of the Chicago White Sox last week, Will Venable, a former associate manager, was the presumed replacement.

It is yet unclear what the new coaching staff will be responsible for. Donnie Ecker, the current bench coach and offensive coordinator, may be promoted to associate manager and work alongside Justin Viele, the recently recruited hitting coach. The team’s new bench coach is Urueta.
