Despite intense pressure, Sam Montembeault saved 33 of 36 shots as Calgary defeated Montreal 26–8 at the end of the first period.

The opening goal for Calgary came after a scramble in front of the Montreal goalie 4:20 into the second period. Emil Heineman stopped Daniil Miromanov’s shot, and it seemed as though the ball bounced off dead Flames forward Nazem Kadri.

This gave Connor Zary the opportunity to score his third goal of the year on the loose puck.

Joel Armia passed to an open Brendan Gallagher in front of the net at 16:23 into the second period, and Gallagher scored his sixth goal to level the score for the Canadiens.

At 5:56 of the third period, Montreal scored a shorthanded goal to take a 3-2 lead. During Calgary’s power play, Armia and Jake Evans had a two-on-one break, and Armia scored his second goal of the year at the end of the play.

Late in the first period, Calgary forward Anthony Mantha sustained a lower-body injury that prevented him from returning to the ice.

Brendan Gallagher scored on the power play for the Canadiens.
