When it comes to free agency this summer, the New York Mets are only thinking about superstars. They have strong ties to elite pitchers Blake Snell and Corbin Burnes, as well as standout outfielder Juan Soto. Pete Alonso, a longstanding Mets fan favorite, is one of the players they have a tight relationship with,
and for good reason. Before becoming free this offseason, 29-year-old Alonso played with the Mets for the first six years of his major league career. Alonso hit 226 home runs in 846 games when he was in the Big Apple. Mark Feinsand of MLB.com doesn’t appear to believe that his time with the Mets is coming to an end.
Alonso was on Feinsand’s list of people New York could get back together with this winter. “Alonso is the biggest name of the Mets’ free agents, and while there has been plenty of chatter about New York making a push for Soto, a reunion with Alonso is definitely in play,” wrote Feinsand. “Alonso has been the face of the franchise for several years,
and his big October moments didn’t hurt his cause, either.” One of the more prominent topics in recent months has been Alonso’s reunion with the Mets. It has been vigorously pushed for by the Mets fan base, but as everyone knows, money is everything. It’s improbable that the Mets will have the funds to re-sign Alonso if they sign superstar Juan Soto. According to Spotrac, Alonso will sign a $174 million contract. It’s clear that the fan favorite first baseman is close to the top of the priority list, but a lot of this is related on the other choices Steve Cohen and the Mets make.
