Edmonton Oilers Sign Another Experienced Key Man To An 8-Year Extension worth $112 million

The Edmonton Oilers sign an eight-year, $112 million extension with another seasoned key player.

With his eight-year, $112 million contract extension, the German star Leon Draisaitl now has the largest salary cap hit in NHL history—$14 million—thanks to the Edmonton Oilers.

According to Bowman, “Today is a historic day for the Edmonton Oilers.”
It is impossible to overestimate Leon’s dedication to the Oilers, our city, and all Oilers supporters worldwide. His goal is to assist Edmonton in winning a Stanley Cup, and this drives everything he does on and off the rink.

This previous year, Draisaitl and Connor McDavid made it to Game 7 of the Stanley Cup final for the franchise. The 2020 league MVP, Leon Draisaitl, was scheduled to be a free agent without restriction the following summer.

The main goal of the Oilers’ summer was to sign Draisaitl. Following a suspension for his involvement in the 2010 sexual assault claims against the Chicago Blackhawks, Bowman was restored by the league office and hired as general manager in late July.

With this new contract, which almost doubles his pay, Draisaitl tops Auston Matthews’ $13.25 million cap hit. The current deal that the 28-year-old Draisaitl signed in 2017 is worth an average of $8.5 million, making it one of the league’s most team-friendly agreements.

With 850 points in 719 regular-season games since making his NHL debut plus 108 points in 74 postseason games, the big forward from Cologne has shown to be worth every cent. With over 40 postseason games played, Draisaitl’s 1.46 points per game rank fourth all-time among players, behind only the great Wayne Gretzky, Mario Lemieux, and Jeremy McDavid.

After this deal expires, the Oilers may focus on re-signing their captain, team leader, and current MVP of the playoffs, Connor McDavid. In the summer of 2026, he may become a free agent, and on July 1st, he might sign a contract extension.
