Michigan’s Sherrone Moore Addresses Possible Changes After Texas Debacle

Sherrone Moore of Michigan Discusses Potential Adjustments Following the Texas Debacle

The Michigan football team hadn’t lost at home since November 28, 2020, until this past Saturday. The Wolverines had also won their last two regular-season games before Saturday. But all of that—possibly more—changed after UM’s first loss in Sherrone Moore’s tenure as head coach after a convincing 31–12 home loss to Texas.

Following his departure in the summer to take a position as head coach of the Los Angeles Chargers, Moore, who had spent the previous three seasons as offensive coordinator and offensive line coach under Jim Harbaugh, also held the positions of interim and acting head coach, was promoted to head coach. Moore’s team defeated Fresno State 30–10 in the first game of his tenure, however the second game went much, much worse.

Michigan was faced with the difficult assignment of facing Texas instead of Fresno State, a consistently good Mountain West club that is led by an interim coach following Jeff Tedford’s resignation due to health concerns. The Longhorns qualified for the College Football Playoffs last season, much like the Wolverines. However, Texas fell to Washington in the semifinals, and Washington went on to lose to Michigan in the national championship game.

But as Saturday’s game demonstrated, there is a significant difference between the Texas and Michigan teams from a season ago. Texas dominated Michigan throughout the entirety of the day, even though they were playing at home in front of almost 100,000 people. The Longhorns led 24-3 going into the half and easily won 31-12 thanks to three interceptions and quarterback Quinn Ewers’ 246-yard, three-touchdown effort.

Following the defeat, Moore appeared to hint that, after more consideration, he could need to make adjustments to his roster, which now includes a number of new players following Harbaugh’s exit.
